- "The name ('red') was used first as an alternate personal name for Esau (Ge 25:30) and then came to be used as a tribal name referring to his descendants (e.g., Gen 36:1-17; Num 20:14-20). These descendants, who probably absorbed portions of other tribal groups such as the Horites, eventually settled in the mountains east of the Rift Valley in the land between the latitudes of the southern end of the Dead Sea and the northern end of the Gulf of Elath/Aqaba, a distance of 110 miles (177 km.)."
